Culture ROU Over a Orbital by Mallacore Culture ROU Over a Orbital by Mallacore
This is a ship based off the culture books by Iain M. Banks.
The ship is a early era ROU (Rapid Offensive Unit) prototype made at the start of the Idiran - Culture war.
In this scene a group of ROUs are skimming over a orbital.

I'd like to see a render of an Idiran. Maybe I'll read Consider Phlebas again to remember what they look like.

Excellent. I read Consider Phlebas sometime in the '80s and only recently returned to the Culture 'series'. Surface Detail and Excession are my favorites so far.

Thank you.

For myself, my favorites where Player of Games with both Look to the Windward and Excession in a close second. Looking forward to The Hydrogen Sonata this fall.

beautiful work...the scene seems serenem, and yet the ships are moving with a certain purpose. so great work there!
One thing I would like to critique on is the edge of the orbital. it seems rather flat and untextured at this stage...I think a few details on it (or even replacing it with a "field") would make this piece even more striking.
oh, and I wouldn't hold my breath for "Matter" if i were you. not his best work :P
Great work here though!

At some point I may give this scene a rework since it was one of my earlier pieces and there is a lot I could improve with my current skill set.

I read Matter when it first came out. I enjoyed the start of the book but I found it lost a lot of it's steam towards the end.

Haha lovin' Vavatch... Really cool. I just finished Consider Phlebas -- but I did think he has better ones. I'm a big fan of The Player of Games.

Thank you.
Right now I'm finishing off my last culture novel while I wait for the new one coming at the end of the month. (Matter)
So my two favorite ones are Player of games and look to the windward. Great books.

Looks more like a fortress world to me. (From the Halo universe) So those are called orbitals in that book?

Well from my understanding halo pulls a lot of ideas from Banks first culture novel. But an orbital is way bigger than the rings in halo at about 12 million km in circumference and they are free orbiting around a star. (So not centered around on star, just orbiting it.)

Heres more infomation on the Culture if you want to look.

I see. Yeah, fortress worlds are only 10.000 kilomiters in diameter I think. Or 100.000 I dont recall clearly anymore. But fortress worlds also orbit stars. Alpha Halo (from halo 1) was in orbit between a planet (Basis) and its moon, encircling the planet.

I forgot it orbited the planet. It's been a bit since I played the games.

Awesome! It has a strong, effective composition and nice modelling work. The ship designs are very believable.
